Modafinil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Jequirity interacts with.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

First things first: jequirity isn't really a supplement question I'd ever want you weighing the pros and cons of, because its seeds contain abrin, a toxin in the same family as ricin. There's no safe or effective use for it, so my honest answer is to steer clear entirely, regardless of your modafinil.

On the interaction itself, here's the gist. Modafinil is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and lab studies (test tube only, not people) suggest jequirity may slow that enzyme down. In theory, that could let modafinil build up a bit, nudging up side effects like headache, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, or a racing heart. The evidence here is very weak and the real-world risk is rated unlikely, so I wouldn't lose sleep over the interaction. I'd lose sleep over the toxin. Please run any questions by your pharmacist or doctor.

Jequirity (Abrus precatorius) is a tropical plant whose bright red, black-tipped seeds contain abrin, one of the most toxic plant proteins known. Despite a long history in traditional medicine, the seeds are dangerously poisonous and there is no reliable evidence that it is safe or effective. It should not be used as a supplement or medicine.

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Brand names: Provigil, Sparlon, Alertec

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
