Atorvastatin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Jequirity interacts with.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

First and most important: jequirity is genuinely poisonous and should never be taken as a supplement. Its seeds contain abrin, a toxin in the same family as ricin, so the real danger here is the plant itself, not any interaction with your cholesterol medicine.

That said, here's the theory on file. Atorvastatin is cleared by an enzyme called CYP3A4, and lab (test tube) studies suggest jequirity can slow that enzyme down. If that happened in a person, atorvastatin could build up a bit, which in theory raises the odds of side effects like muscle aches or, rarely, liver irritation. But this is only in vitro evidence, rated minor and unlikely, so I wouldn't read too much into it. The bottom line stays the same: don't use jequirity, and check with your pharmacist or doctor about anything you take.

Jequirity (Abrus precatorius) is a tropical plant whose bright red, black-tipped seeds contain abrin, one of the most toxic plant proteins known. Despite a long history in traditional medicine, the seeds are dangerously poisonous and there is no reliable evidence that it is safe or effective. It should not be used as a supplement or medicine.

What Is Atorvastatin Used For?

Brand name: Atorvaliq

Atorvastatin is used alongside a healthy diet to lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol, triglycerides (blood fats), and other harmful lipids, while raising HDL ("good") cholesterol. It treats primary hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), mixed dyslipidemia (mixed abnormal blood fats), hypertriglyceridemia (high triglycerides), and inherited conditions such as heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia — including in children aged 10 and older.

Beyond cholesterol control, atorvastatin is used to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, revascularization procedures, and angina (chest pain) in adults with coronary heart disease or multiple risk factors for it — including adults with type 2 diabetes who have risk factors for heart disease even without a confirmed heart disease diagnosis.
