In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Let me start with the most important point: jequirity seeds are genuinely poisonous and shouldn't be taken at all, so the real concern here isn't a subtle drug interaction, it's the toxin itself. With that said, here's the theory on file. Lab (test-tube) studies suggest jequirity extract can slow down an enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear pantoprazole.

Pantoprazole is active as-is (not a prodrug), so if that enzyme were blocked, levels could creep up a bit, possibly nudging side effects like headache, stomach upset, or diarrhea. But this is only seen in a dish, the rating is minor and unlikely, and pantoprazole is fairly forgiving. Bottom line: don't use jequirity, and check with your pharmacist if you have questions.

Jequirity (Abrus precatorius) is a tropical plant whose bright red, black-tipped seeds contain abrin, one of the most toxic plant proteins known. Despite a long history in traditional medicine, the seeds are dangerously poisonous and there is no reliable evidence that it is safe or effective. It should not be used as a supplement or medicine.

About Pantoprazole

What Is Pantoprazole Used For?

Brand names: Protonix, Pantoloc, Protonix IV

Pantoprazole delayed-release tablets and oral suspension are used in adults and children 5 years and older to heal erosive esophagitis (EE) — damage to the esophagus caused by stomach acid — and to relieve GERD symptoms short-term (up to 8 weeks). In adults, they are also used to maintain that healing and reduce heartburn relapse, and to treat conditions where the stomach makes too much acid, including Zollinger-Ellison (ZE) Syndrome.

Intravenous (IV) pantoprazole — given by injection or infusion in a clinical setting — is approved in adults for short-term treatment of GERD with a history of erosive esophagitis (up to 10 days) and for pathological hypersecretory conditions including ZE Syndrome. PROTONIX I.V. is also approved for GERD/EE in pediatric patients 3 months and older (up to 7 days). IV pantoprazole is not approved for treating upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
