Budesonide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Jequirity interacts with.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the short version on this one. Your body relies heavily on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down budesonide. In a test tube, jequirity extract appeared to slow that enzyme down. If that held true in people, less of the drug would get cleared and more could build up, which in theory could nudge up steroid-type side effects like fluid retention, higher blood sugar, mood changes, or trouble sleeping.

But please keep this in perspective. This is based only on lab research, the interaction is rated minor and unlikely, and there's no real-world proof it happens. The bigger issue is jequirity itself: its seeds contain abrin, a severe poison, and it should not be taken at all. Please skip it and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have questions.

Jequirity (Abrus precatorius) is a tropical plant whose bright red, black-tipped seeds contain abrin, one of the most toxic plant proteins known. Despite a long history in traditional medicine, the seeds are dangerously poisonous and there is no reliable evidence that it is safe or effective. It should not be used as a supplement or medicine.

What Is Budesonide Used For?

Brand names: Entocort EC, Pulmicort, Uceris, Tarpeyo, Eohilia

Budesonide inhalation suspension is used as a maintenance (long-term control) treatment for asthma in children 12 months to 8 years old. It also works as a preventive (prophylactic) therapy to reduce the frequency of asthma symptoms.

Important: This medication is not a rescue inhaler. It will not stop a sudden asthma attack. A separate fast-acting bronchodilator is needed for sudden symptoms.
