Nifedipine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Jequirity interacts with.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Let me be upfront here: the real concern with jequirity isn't the drug interaction at all. The seeds contain abrin, a toxin in the same family as ricin, and they are genuinely poisonous. This plant should not be taken as a supplement or remedy, period.

As for the theory on file: in a lab dish, jequirity extract slowed down CYP3A4, the liver enzyme that breaks down nifedipine. If that happened in the body, nifedipine could build up and push its blood-pressure-lowering effect too far, causing dizziness, flushing, headache, ankle swelling, or a racing heartbeat. But this is only test-tube evidence, rated weak, so it's theoretical. Bottom line, skip jequirity entirely, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any new product.

Jequirity (Abrus precatorius) is a tropical plant whose bright red, black-tipped seeds contain abrin, one of the most toxic plant proteins known. Despite a long history in traditional medicine, the seeds are dangerously poisonous and there is no reliable evidence that it is safe or effective. It should not be used as a supplement or medicine.

What Is Nifedipine Used For?

Brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, Nifed, Procardia, Adalat XL, Adalat CC, Adalat LA, Adalat Retard, Adipine MR, Adipine XL, Cardilate MR, Coracten SR, Coracten XL, Fortipine LA 40, Hypolar Retard 20, Nifedipress MR, Nifopress Retard, Tensipine MR

Nifedipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension), chronic stable angina (chest pain brought on by physical effort), and vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by spasm of the coronary arteries, sometimes called Prinzmetal's angina). Lowering blood pressure with nifedipine helps reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

The capsule form is approved for vasospastic angina and chronic stable angina only — it is not approved for high blood pressure. The extended-release tablet (including Procardia) covers all three uses: vasospastic angina, chronic stable angina, and high blood pressure.
