Cyclosporine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Jequirity interacts with.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

First things first: jequirity seeds are genuinely poisonous (they contain abrin, a relative of ricin), so this is really a plant you should never take at all, regardless of your medications. That alone is the bigger concern here.

On the interaction itself, your cyclosporine is cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and lab-dish studies suggest jequirity may slow that enzyme down. In theory, slowing it could let cyclosporine build up in your blood. Since cyclosporine is a narrow-therapeutic-index drug, even small increases can matter, meaning more chance of side effects like kidney strain, high blood pressure, tremor, or headache. That said, this is only test-tube evidence rated as unlikely, so it's theoretical. Please don't use jequirity, and check with your transplant team or pharmacist about anything new.

Jequirity (Abrus precatorius) is a tropical plant whose bright red, black-tipped seeds contain abrin, one of the most toxic plant proteins known. Despite a long history in traditional medicine, the seeds are dangerously poisonous and there is no reliable evidence that it is safe or effective. It should not be used as a supplement or medicine.

Cyclosporine is prescribed to help prevent the body from rejecting a transplanted kidney, liver, or heart. It is often used alongside other immunosuppressive medicines as part of a full transplant care plan.

It is also used for adults with severe, active rheumatoid arthritis that hasn't responded well enough to methotrexate, and for adults with severe plaque psoriasis who haven't had success with other standard treatments.
