Clindamycin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Jequirity interacts with.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the honest first thing I'll say: jequirity isn't something you should ever take. Its seeds contain abrin, a toxin in the same family as ricin, and it can be deadly. So my real advice has nothing to do with clindamycin and everything to do with steering clear of this plant entirely.

As for the interaction itself, it's very weak on paper. Lab (test tube) research suggests jequirity might slow down CYP3A4, one of the liver enzymes that helps clear clindamycin. In theory, that could let clindamycin build up a little, which might mean more stomach upset or diarrhea. But this is rated minor and unlikely, based only on lab data, not real people. The toxicity is the actual danger here. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor.

Jequirity (Abrus precatorius) is a tropical plant whose bright red, black-tipped seeds contain abrin, one of the most toxic plant proteins known. Despite a long history in traditional medicine, the seeds are dangerously poisonous and there is no reliable evidence that it is safe or effective. It should not be used as a supplement or medicine.

What Is Clindamycin Used For?

Clindamycin is prescribed for serious infections caused by certain bacteria — including anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that thrive without oxygen), streptococci, staphylococci, and pneumococci. It's often chosen when penicillin-type antibiotics can't be used, such as in people with a penicillin allergy.

It can treat infections of the lungs, skin and soft tissue, bloodstream, abdomen, and female reproductive organs. Because it carries real risks, doctors reserve it for infections where safer antibiotics aren't appropriate.
