Progestin, Oral Contraceptive falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Jequirity interacts with.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

First, a bigger safety point: jequirity seeds contain abrin, a toxin in the same family as ricin. This plant is genuinely poisonous and is not something I would ever recommend swallowing, no matter what the label promises.

Setting that aside, here's the interaction itself. Your drospirenone pill (Slynd) is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In a lab dish, jequirity extract slowed that enzyme down. In theory, that could let a bit more progestin linger in your body, which might mean more spotting, breast tenderness, headache, or nausea. But this is only test-tube data, the effect is rated minor, and it's considered unlikely to happen in real life. Please don't start jequirity, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any supplement to your birth control.

  • Progestin-only (drospirenone) oral contraceptives are used to prevent pregnancy. Progestin is a female hormone. It works by preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries (ovulation) and changing the cervical mucus and the lining of the uterus. Progestin-only oral contraceptives are a very effective method of birth control, but they do not prevent the spread of of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome [AIDS]) and other sexually transmitted diseases.
