Acetaminophen, Butalbital, Caffeine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Jequirity interacts with.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

First things first: jequirity seeds aren't really a supplement to consider at all. They contain abrin, a poison closely related to ricin, and even a small amount can be deadly. So the bigger safety message here has nothing to do with your headache medicine.

That said, here's the interaction on file. In a lab dish, jequirity extract slowed down an enzyme called CYP3A4, which helps your body process the butalbital part of your tension-headache pill. In theory, blocking that enzyme could let butalbital build up, meaning more drowsiness, dizziness, or grogginess. But this is only test-tube data, rated unlikely and minor, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The real takeaway is simply to avoid jequirity entirely and check with your pharmacist about anything new.

Jequirity (Abrus precatorius) is a tropical plant whose bright red, black-tipped seeds contain abrin, one of the most toxic plant proteins known. Despite a long history in traditional medicine, the seeds are dangerously poisonous and there is no reliable evidence that it is safe or effective. It should not be used as a supplement or medicine.

What Is Acetaminophen, Butalbital, and Caffeine Used For?

Brand names: Tecnal, Esgic Plus, Fiogesic, Triad, Repan, Esgic, Fioricet

This combination product — available as capsules, tablets, and oral solution under various names including Fioricet — is used to relieve the symptoms of tension headaches (also called muscle contraction headaches).

All supported products, including Fioricet capsules and the oral solution, share this same indication. Because butalbital can be habit-forming, extended or repeated use is not recommended, and these products are not established as safe or effective for treating headaches that come back frequently over time.
