Jequirity and Irinotecan Hydrochloride

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Irinotecan Hydrochloride

Irinotecan Hydrochloride falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Jequirity interacts with.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

First things first: jequirity seeds are genuinely poisonous (they contain abrin, a toxin similar to ricin), so this is not something you should ever take as a supplement. Please don't use it. With that said, here's the interaction question itself. Your body partly relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to process irinotecan. Lab-dish studies suggest jequirity can block that enzyme, which in theory could slow how irinotecan is cleared and let levels climb a bit higher.

If that happened, you might see more of irinotecan's usual side effects, like severe diarrhea, low blood counts, nausea, and fatigue. But this concern is purely theoretical, drawn only from test-tube work, so the real-world risk is low. Still, run any supplement past your oncology team first.
