Vinblastine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Jequirity interacts with.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

First things first: jequirity seeds are genuinely poisonous (they contain abrin, a toxin related to ricin), so they should never be taken as a supplement at all. Setting that danger aside, the interaction on file is a theoretical one drawn only from lab studies. In a test tube, jequirity extract slowed down an enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the main ways your body clears vinblastine.

Vinblastine works as-is (it is not a prodrug), so if that enzyme were blocked, the drug could build up and hit harder. With vinblastine that could mean worse low blood counts, nausea, constipation, or nerve tingling. That said, this is unlikely and rated minor, with no human evidence behind it. Please don't go near jequirity, and run any supplement past your oncology team.

Jequirity (Abrus precatorius) is a tropical plant whose bright red, black-tipped seeds contain abrin, one of the most toxic plant proteins known. Despite a long history in traditional medicine, the seeds are dangerously poisonous and there is no reliable evidence that it is safe or effective. It should not be used as a supplement or medicine.

What Is Vinblastine Used For?

Brand name: Velban

Vinblastine Sulfate Injection is used in the treatment of a range of cancers. Conditions that tend to respond well include generalized Hodgkin's disease, lymphocytic lymphoma, histiocytic lymphoma, advanced mycosis fungoides (a type of skin lymphoma), advanced testicular cancer, Kaposi's sarcoma, and Letterer-Siwe disease (a rare immune condition also called histiocytosis X).

It may also be used for cancers that respond less reliably, such as choriocarcinoma resistant to other chemotherapy drugs, and breast cancer that has not responded to hormonal therapy. Vinblastine is often given as part of a combination chemotherapy regimen alongside other cancer medicines to improve response rates.
