Jequirity and Venetoclax

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Venetoclax

Venetoclax falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Jequirity interacts with.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

First things first: jequirity seeds are genuinely poisonous and should never be taken as a supplement, full stop. The toxin abrin can be deadly, so this is not something I'd ever recommend swallowing alongside any medication, including Venclexta (venetoclax).

Setting the poison issue aside, the interaction itself is very weak on paper. Lab dish studies suggest jequirity might block CYP3A4, the same liver enzyme that clears venetoclax from your body. In theory, slowing that breakdown could let venetoclax build up, which matters because higher levels raise the risk of tumor lysis syndrome, low blood counts, infections, nausea, and diarrhea. But this is only test-tube evidence, not seen in people. The real takeaway is simple: don't use jequirity, and check with your oncologist or pharmacist about anything new.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Venetoclax page

“Venetoclax (Venclexta) is a targeted leukemia and lymphoma drug whose blood level is managed carefully, since too much invites serious side effects and too little gives the cancer room. That makes this a list to treat with genuine caution.”
