Here's the gist with Syrian Rue and your nitrofurantoin (Macrobid, Macrodantin). This isn't about Syrian Rue changing how your antibiotic is broken down or how well it fights your urinary infection. The concern is purely about the liver. In rare cases, nitrofurantoin can stress or irritate the liver, and Syrian Rue, especially in large amounts, has its own reports of liver injury.

Stacking two things that can each be hard on the liver may, in theory, add up. Keep in mind this is a theoretical worry based on how these substances behave, not solid human studies, and the liver cases happened after people swallowed huge quantities of the seeds. Still, signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness are worth a quick call to your pharmacist or doctor. Please check before combining them.

What is Syrian Rue?

Syrian Rue (Peganum harmala) is a traditional plant whose seeds contain potent compounds called harmala alkaloids, including MAO-inhibiting harmine and harmaline. There is little reliable human evidence that it safely treats any condition, and it carries real risks of toxicity, so it is not recommended for self-treatment. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before considering it.

About Nitrofurantoin

What Is Nitrofurantoin Used For?

Brand names: Macrodantin, Furadantin, Furatoin, Macrobid

Nitrofurantoin treats urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by specific susceptible bacteria. The capsule forms (including Macrodantin and nitrofurantoin macrocrystals capsules) are indicated for UTIs due to Escherichia coli, enterococci, Staphylococcus aureus, and certain strains of Klebsiella and Enterobacter species. Nitrofurantoin capsules (monohydrate/macrocrystals) are indicated only for acute uncomplicated UTIs (acute cystitis) caused by E. coli or Staphylococcus saprophyticus.

Nitrofurantoin oral suspension (Furadantin) is indicated for adults and children 1 month of age and older for UTIs caused by susceptible strains of E. coli, Enterococcus species, S. aureus, Klebsiella species, and Enterobacter species. No form of nitrofurantoin is approved for kidney infections (pyelonephritis) or infections in the tissue surrounding the kidneys (perinephric abscesses).
