Taurine + Bupropion
Bupropion brand names: Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Zyban, Wellbutrin XL, Aplenzin, and others.
We found no known interaction between Taurine and Bupropion in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.
Taurine and Bupropion
We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.
No Known Interaction Found
We did not find a documented interaction between Bupropion and Taurine in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.
If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.
Taurine safety at a glance
Pregnancy & breastfeeding ratings are from Natural Medicines (Therapeutic Research Center) — the full detail is in the Special populations card below. Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.
Why No Interaction Is Listed for Bupropion
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Bupropion is filed under 6 classifications — including antidepressant drugs, cytochrome p450 2b6 (cyp2b6) substrates, cytochrome p450 2d6 (cyp2d6) inhibitors. Taurine has documented interactions with 2 drug classes — the most serious being antihypertensive drugs (moderate) and lithium (moderate) — and none of Bupropion’s classifications are among them.
Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.
Taurine Does Interact With Other Medications
Taurine has 173 moderate known drug interactions in our database — Bupropion isn’t one of them. If you take anything else, check it against the full list below.

Questions About Taurine or Bupropion
These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers Taurine or Bupropion, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:
- How Far Apart Should You Take Wellbutrin XL and Tamoxifen? ›
- Do I Need to Space Out Wellbutrin XL and Eliquis? ›
- Interaction Concerns With Custom Vardenafil, Tadalafil, Citrulline Med ›
Not quite your question? Ask our pharmacists directly — it is free, there is no account required, and answers usually come back within 24 hours.
See Every Supplement That Interacts With Bupropion
This page covers Taurine only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Bupropion page lists 46 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Adrafinil (moderate), African Wild Potato (moderate), Artichoke (moderate) and Astaxanthin (moderate).
By severity: 1 major · 33 moderate · 12 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bupropion page
“Bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban) deserves genuine care around supplements, and the entry to understand first is activated charcoal, the only major-rated interaction on this list. Charcoal and similar bulk products can soak up the drug in the gut and blunt its effect, so space them well apart from your dose.”

Where does our data come from?
- Source: the Natural Medicines (TRC Healthcare) clinical database — the evidence-graded professional reference for herb & supplement interactions.
- Citation library: 103,510 references behind our interaction content, 65,311 of them resolved to verified PubMed/DOI sources. See every Taurine reference on this page ↓
- Freshness: we automatically re-check this combination every week — this pair was last verified September 13, 2026. The Taurine and Bupropion records this page draws on were last updated July 10, 2026.
- What “no known interaction” means: no documented interaction in the sources above — not a guarantee of safety. Supplements are studied far less than prescription drugs, so we say exactly what the evidence supports, and nothing more.
About Taurine
What is Taurine?
- Exercise performance and endurance
- Heart health
- Energy support
- Eye and nerve health
- Blood sugar support
Taurine is an amino acid your body makes naturally and that you also get from animal foods. It is widely used in energy drinks and sports supplements, and short-term use appears generally safe for most adults, though the evidence for many claimed benefits is mixed or limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before taking it regularly, especially if you have a health condition or take medications.
Amino acid (made in the body; also found in meat, fish, and shellfish) · Capsules, tablets, powder, energy drinks, pre-workout blends
An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Taurine is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Taurine record says about it on its own.
Taurine: dosing
There is no single official recommended dose of taurine, and a standardized dose has not been firmly established for most uses. Amounts used in studies have varied widely. If you choose to take taurine, follow the directions on the product label and do not exceed them.

About Bupropion
What Is Bupropion Used For?
Brand names: Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Zyban, Wellbutrin XL, Aplenzin, Forfivo XL
Bupropion is FDA-approved to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) — a form of clinical depression. Extended-release formulations (XL and hydrobromide versions, including Aplenzin) are also approved for the prevention of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), the pattern of depression that tends to arrive in autumn and winter.
Not all formulations share every indication. Aplenzin (bupropion hydrobromide extended-release) and bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets (XL) are indicated for both MDD and SAD. Bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets (SR) and bupropion hydrochloride immediate-release tablets are indicated for MDD only.

Bupropion Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Bupropion as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Taurine — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
