Acamprosate falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs the other way around from what you might expect. It is not that acamprosate (Campral) changes your thyroid supplement, but rather that acamprosate, like other pills you swallow, can sit in your stomach and intestines at the same time as the thyroid hormone and get in the way of how well that hormone is absorbed. Thyroid hormones are picky and absorb best on an empty stomach, so anything taken alongside them can blunt their effect.

Acamprosate itself is not a prodrug, and it is barely broken down by the body, so your thyroid supplement should not change how the acamprosate works or its usual mild side effects like diarrhea. The practical fix is simple timing: separate them by a few hours. A quick chat with your pharmacist can help you space them correctly.

Acamprosate Calcium delayed-release tablets are used to help people with alcohol dependence maintain abstinence — meaning they are used to support staying sober, not to help someone stop drinking in the first place. The medication is started after a person has already gone through alcohol withdrawal and is alcohol-free.

Acamprosate Calcium delayed-release tablets are meant to be part of a broader treatment plan that includes counseling and other psychosocial support. They have not been shown to be effective in people who have not yet detoxed or achieved abstinence before starting treatment.
