Here's the simple version: when you take a thyroid extract supplement, anything you swallow around the same time can change how much of that thyroid hormone your gut actually absorbs. Caffeine, taken as a tablet, falls into that 'other stuff in your stomach' bucket. If they go down together, the caffeine (and the cup of coffee or food that often comes with it) may slightly blunt how well your thyroid hormone gets picked up.

The good news is this is rated minor, and it's mostly about timing, not danger. A practical move many people use is taking thyroid hormone on an empty stomach first thing, then waiting 30 to 60 minutes before caffeine or breakfast. Keep in mind caffeine itself can cause jitters, a fast heartbeat, or trouble sleeping, so run your routine by your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Caffeine

What Is Caffeine Used For?

Brand names: Dextrophin, Caffeine

Caffeine citrate injection and caffeine citrate oral solution are indicated for the short-term treatment of apnea of prematurity (breathing pauses in premature babies) in infants between 28 and 33 weeks gestational age. These are prescription, hospital-administered products.

Over-the-counter caffeine tablets (such as Diurex) are used by adults to temporarily reduce fatigue and drowsiness. The Earthmed Uplift Chewable products are chewable caffeine gels for adults 18 and older. Children under 12 should not use caffeine products as a substitute for sleep.
