Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs the other direction from what you might expect. It isn't that your allergy pill changes your thyroid extract. Instead, taking other things at the same time as thyroid hormone can block the thyroid hormone from being absorbed, so it doesn't work as well. Desloratadine (Clarinex) itself is a fairly gentle antihistamine and isn't known to grab onto thyroid hormone the way calcium, iron, or antacids do.

Still, the safest habit is simple timing. Take your thyroid extract on an empty stomach and wait about 30 to 60 minutes before swallowing your Clarinex or anything else. What Is Desloratadine Used For?

Brand name: Clarinex

Desloratadine treats nasal and non-nasal symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and perennial allergic rhinitis (year-round allergies). It also provides symptomatic relief for chronic idiopathic urticaria — ongoing hives with no identified cause — reducing itching, the number of hives, and their size.

Age eligibility varies by product. Desloratadine tablets (including Clarinex tablets) are approved for patients 12 years and older. Desloratadine orally disintegrating tablets are approved for patients 6 years and older for allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria. Desloratadine Oral Solution is approved for the youngest patients — down to 6 months of age for perennial allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria, and down to 2 years for seasonal allergic rhinitis.
