Methenamine Mandelate falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's where I want to slow down, because the drug details listed look mixed up. The brand name shown, Methimazole, is actually a medicine that lowers an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), and that's a very different thing from Methenamine Mandelate, which is a urinary antiseptic. Either way, neither of these is a thyroid hormone replacement, so the interaction on file (about food and minerals blocking absorption of thyroid hormone) doesn't really line up with this drug.

If you're truly taking methimazole, adding a thyroid extract that contains real T3 and T4 works against it, since you'd be putting back the very hormone the methimazole is trying to bring down. That could undo your treatment. Please confirm exactly which medicine you have with your pharmacist before mixing in any thyroid supplement.

What Is Methimazole Used For?

Brand names: Mandelamine, Methimazole

Methimazole tablets are used in adults and children with hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid) due to Graves' disease or toxic multinodular goiter when surgery or radioactive iodine is not the right option. They work to lower thyroid hormone levels and ease symptoms.

Methimazole tablets are also used to bring thyroid hormone levels down before a patient undergoes thyroidectomy (thyroid surgery) or radioactive iodine treatment, making those procedures safer.
