Fostamatinib falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs the other direction from what you might expect. It isn't that your Fostamatinib (Tavalisse) changes your thyroid extract. Instead, taking the two close together may keep the thyroid hormones from being absorbed well. The thyroid hormones in animal-derived extract behave like the active ingredient in prescription thyroid medicine, and they get picked up best on an empty stomach. Swallowing them alongside another pill can blunt that absorption.

The good news is this is a minor, easily managed timing issue, not a dangerous reaction. Separating them, often by taking your thyroid product 30 to 60 minutes before anything else, usually solves it. Since OTC thyroid extract is unpredictable to begin with, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before mixing these.

What Is Fostamatinib Used For?

Brand name: Tavalisse

Tavalisse (fostamatinib) is used to treat thrombocytopenia — dangerously low platelet counts — in adults with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). It is specifically for people whose platelet counts have not improved enough with at least one earlier ITP treatment.

The goal is to raise platelet counts high enough to reduce the risk of serious bleeding. If platelet counts do not respond sufficiently after 12 weeks, the medication is typically stopped.
