Lomitapide falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs the other way from what people usually expect. It is not that lomitapide changes your thyroid extract, but that taking the two together at the same time may keep your body from fully absorbing the thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). When your stomach has other pills and food in it, those hormones can bind up and pass through less effectively, so you may get a weaker thyroid effect.

The good news is this is rated minor and is really about timing, not danger. Thyroid hormone works best on an empty stomach, ideally 30 to 60 minutes before other medicines and food. A simple fix is to space the two apart. Since thyroid extract doses are unpredictable anyway, please confirm your routine with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Lomitapide

What Is Lomitapide Used For?

Brand name: Juxtapid

Juxtapid (lomitapide) is used alongside a low-fat diet and other cholesterol-lowering treatments — including LDL apheresis (a procedure that filters LDL from the blood) where available — to lower LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and non-HDL cholesterol in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH). HoFH is a rare, inherited condition that causes extremely high LDL cholesterol levels from birth.

Juxtapid is approved for use in adults and in children aged 2 years and older with HoFH. It has not been proven safe or effective for other types of high cholesterol, including the more common heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH). Its effect on heart attacks, strokes, or other cardiovascular events has not been established.
