Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's some good news: the interaction on file is really about oral medicines and how food or minerals can block your body from absorbing swallowed thyroid hormone. The mometasone you asked about (Elocon) is a cream or ointment you put on your skin. It mostly works right where you apply it and isn't swallowed, so it doesn't compete with thyroid extract in your stomach the way an oral pill would.

So for skin mometasone, I wouldn't expect a meaningful problem with thyroid extract. The bigger caution is the thyroid extract itself, since over-the-counter products aren't standardized. If you're using the inhaled form (Asmanex) or have questions, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Mometasone Furoate topical products are used to relieve the inflammation and itching (pruritus) that come with corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses — a broad category of skin conditions that respond to steroid treatment.

Mometasone Furoate Topical Solution (Lotion) is specifically indicated for these skin conditions in patients 12 years of age and older. Mometasone Furoate cream may be used in adults and in children 2 years of age and older.
