Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's the gist for you: when you take a thyroid extract (which contains real thyroid hormones), your body absorbs those hormones best on an empty stomach. Taking other things at the same time, like oral progesterone (Prometrium), could get in the way and slightly reduce how much thyroid hormone you take in. This is rated a minor interaction, so it's not something to panic over.

The simple fix is timing. Take your thyroid product on an empty stomach, then wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before your progesterone capsule. Since over-the-counter thyroid extract doses are unpredictable anyway, I'd really encourage you to go over your whole routine with your pharmacist or doctor to make sure your thyroid is being treated safely.

What Is Progesterone Vaginal Used For?

Brand names: Prometrium, Endometrin, Utrogestan

Endometrin (vaginal insert) is used as part of an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) program to support embryo implantation and help maintain pregnancy through the first 10 weeks in infertile women under 35. It works by supplementing the body's natural progesterone when the corpus luteum (the structure in the ovary that normally produces progesterone) cannot do so on its own.

Crinone (vaginal gel) is used in ART programs to provide progesterone supplementation — or full progesterone replacement in women with partial or complete ovarian failure. Crinone is also used to treat secondary amenorrhea, which is when menstrual periods stop in women who previously had them.
