Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's the gist for these two: taking salsalate (an arthritis pain reliever) at the same time as a thyroid extract supplement can slightly blunt how well your body soaks up the thyroid hormones. Salsalate isn't a prodrug, so the concern runs the other way. It's the thyroid hormone absorption that can dip a bit, not the salsalate. This is rated a minor, mostly timing-related issue.

The easy fix is spacing them out. Thyroid hormone is best taken on an empty stomach, and other pills like salsalate are usually fine a few hours later. If your thyroid symptoms feel off (tiredness, weight changes, feeling cold), check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Salsalate tablets are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and related rheumatic disorders. It helps relieve pain, swelling, and stiffness associated with these conditions.

It is not approved for use in children, and it must not be used for pain relief around the time of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) heart surgery.
