Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs the other direction from what you might expect. It is not that Voxelotor (Oxbryta) changes your thyroid extract. Rather, taking the two together in your stomach at the same time can get in the way of your thyroid hormone being absorbed. Thyroid hormones are picky about timing, and other pills sitting in your gut alongside them can lower how much gets into your bloodstream.

The practical fix is simple: separate them. Thyroid products absorb best on an empty stomach, so taking your thyroid in the morning and your Voxelotor at a different time usually keeps both working well. This is a minor, well-known timing issue, not a dangerous reaction. Still, check with your pharmacist or doctor on the best schedule for you.

Brand name: Oxbryta

Oxbryta (voxelotor) is approved to treat sickle cell disease (SCD) in adults and in children as young as 4 years old. It works by targeting the underlying problem in sickle cell disease — the abnormal hemoglobin that causes red blood cells to take on a rigid, sickle shape.

This approval was granted under the FDA's accelerated approval pathway, based on the drug's ability to raise hemoglobin levels. Continued approval may depend on results from confirmatory clinical trials showing broader clinical benefit.
