Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: tragacanth is basically a thick, water-loving fiber gel. When you swallow it close to a pill, that gel can sometimes grab onto the medicine in your gut and change how much actually gets absorbed. With Adefovir (Hepsera), your hepatitis B medicine, the worry is that absorption could go up, down, or stay the same. If less gets absorbed, you may not keep the virus as well controlled over time, which is the whole point of taking it daily.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern, based on how the fiber behaves, not on real cases in people. Food amounts of tragacanth are unlikely to be a problem. To play it safe, take your Adefovir first and wait about 30 to 60 minutes before any tragacanth. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Adefovir Used For?

Brand name: Hepsera

Adefovir Dipivoxil Tablets and Hepsera are used to treat chronic hepatitis B — a long-term liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) — in patients 12 years of age and older who have signs of active viral replication and either persistently elevated liver enzymes or active liver disease confirmed on biopsy.

The indication covers adults with both HBeAg-positive and HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B, including those with lamivudine-resistant hepatitis B virus. In adolescents aged 12 to less than 18, the approval is based on virological and biochemical responses in HBeAg-positive patients with compensated (still-functioning) liver disease.
