Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the good news on this one. The concern on file is about tragacanth's gel-forming fiber slowing or changing how oral medicines get absorbed from your gut. But bevacizumab (Avastin) isn't a pill you swallow. It's given as an infusion into a vein at an infusion center, so it bypasses your stomach and intestines entirely.

Because of that, tragacanth in your diet shouldn't affect how much bevacizumab reaches your bloodstream. This whole interaction is theoretical and only applies to drugs taken by mouth. That said, cancer treatment often involves several medications, and some of those are oral. If you're taking any pills alongside your infusions, it's smart to run your supplement list past your oncology pharmacist just to be safe.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Bevacizumab Injection

What Is Bevacizumab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Avastin

Bevacizumab injection is used to treat multiple types of advanced or metastatic cancers, most often in combination with chemotherapy. Avastin is approved for metastatic colorectal cancer (when combined with specific fluorouracil-based chemotherapy regimens), non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer (first-line, with carboplatin and paclitaxel), recurrent glioblastoma in adults, metastatic renal cell carcinoma (with interferon alfa), persistent or metastatic cervical cancer, and hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer, in combination with atezolizumab for patients who have not yet received systemic therapy).

Avastin is also approved for epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancer — including stage III/IV disease after surgery, platinum-resistant recurrent disease, and platinum-sensitive recurrent disease — each with specific chemotherapy partner regimens. Note that Avastin is not indicated for adjuvant (preventive post-surgery) treatment of colon cancer.
