Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's some good news that should ease your mind. The interaction on file talks about tragacanth possibly changing how oral medications get absorbed from the gut, because its gummy fiber can soak up and slow things down. But cetuximab (Erbitux) isn't a pill you swallow. It's a monoclonal antibody given as an infusion straight into a vein at your treatment center, so it never travels through your stomach or intestines where tragacanth's gel would be sitting.

Because of that, this particular absorption concern really doesn't apply to cetuximab. This is a theory-only flag for swallowed drugs, and yours isn't one. Still, since you're going through cancer treatment, it's always smart to run any new supplement past your oncology pharmacist or doctor first.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Cetuximab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Erbitux

Erbitux (cetuximab injection) treats squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck — including locally or regionally advanced disease (combined with radiation therapy), and recurrent or metastatic disease (combined with platinum-based chemotherapy plus fluorouracil, or alone after prior platinum-based therapy has failed).

Erbitux also treats certain types of metastatic colorectal cancer. This includes K-Ras wild-type, EGFR-expressing colorectal cancer (used with FOLFIRI, with irinotecan, or alone) and BRAF V600E mutation-positive metastatic colorectal cancer (used with encorafenib after prior therapy). Erbitux is not for Ras-mutant colorectal cancer or when Ras mutation test results are unknown.
