Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with this combo. Tragacanth is a gummy fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. In theory, that gel can grab onto whatever else is sitting in your gut and slow down or change how well a swallowed medicine gets absorbed. So when you take it close to your Vicks Formula 44D (which has dextromethorphan for cough and phenylephrine for congestion), it might blunt how much medicine your body picks up, meaning a bit less cough or congestion relief. It could also nudge absorption the other way. Honestly, nobody knows for sure.

This is a theoretical concern based on how fiber gels behave, not proven cases, so don't lose sleep over it. To stay safe, just take tragacanth about 30 to 60 minutes after your cough and cold medicine. Run it by your pharmacist if you're unsure.
