Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with oral ketoconazole and tragacanth. Tragacanth swells into a thick, slippery gel when it hits fluid in your gut. In theory, that gel could grab onto a swallowed medication and slow or change how much of it gets absorbed into your bloodstream. With ketoconazole, that mostly matters because if less gets absorbed, the antifungal may not work as well against your infection.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how fiber gels behave, not something proven in studies, so don't panic. A simple fix is to space them out: take your ketoconazole first, then wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before the tragacanth. If you're unsure, your pharmacist can help you set up the timing.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Ketoconazole Used For?

Brand name: Nizoral

Ketoconazole 2% shampoo and foam are used to treat tinea versicolor (also called pityriasis versicolor) — a fungal infection caused by Pityrosporum orbiculare (also known as Malassezia furfur), a yeast that naturally lives on the skin.

This infection creates light or dark patches, most often on the trunk, neck, arms, and upper thighs. Even after the fungus is cleared, those skin patches may take months to return to their normal color — that's normal, and depends on your skin type and sun exposure. Tinea versicolor can also come back, since the fungus lives on healthy skin even when there's no active infection.
