Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: tragacanth is a gummy fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. When you swallow a pill like midostaurin (Rydapt) too close to that gel, the gel can trap part of the drug and change how much gets absorbed. It could go either way, slightly less or slightly more, so this isn't a precise effect we can predict.

Midostaurin is an oral cancer medicine that already needs steady, reliable levels to work against your leukemia or mastocytosis. To keep things consistent, the safe move is to space them out: take your midostaurin first, then wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before any tragacanth. This concern is theoretical, but please run it by your oncology team or pharmacist before mixing them.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Midostaurin Used For?

Brand name: Rydapt

  • Midostaurin is used with other chemotherapy drugs to treat certain types of acute myeloid leukemia (AML; a type of cancer of the white blood cells). Midostaurin is also used to certain types of mastocytosis (a blood disorder in which there are too many mast cells [a certain kind of white blood cell]). Midostaurin is in a class of medications called kinase inhibitors. It works by blocking the action of the abnormal protein that signals cancer cells to multiply. This helps stop the spread of mast and cancer cells.
