Here's the simple version: tragacanth is a gummy fiber that swells into a thick gel when it hits liquid in your stomach. That gel can sometimes wrap around a pill and slow or change how much of it your body soaks up. With Akynzeo (netupitant and palonosetron), the worry is that less of the medicine might get absorbed, and since you take this exactly once before chemo to head off nausea and vomiting, you really don't want it to fall short.

The good news is this is theoretical, based on how fiber gums behave rather than real cases with this drug. To stay on the safe side, separate them by taking tragacanth 30 to 60 minutes after your Akynzeo dose. When in doubt, run it by your oncology pharmacist first.

What Is Netupitant and Palonosetron Used For?

Brand name: Akynzeo

Akynzeo capsules are used in adults to prevent both the short-term (acute) and longer-lasting (delayed) nausea and vomiting that can follow cancer chemotherapy — including, but not limited to, highly emetogenic (strongly nausea-causing) chemotherapy regimens. It is always taken together with the steroid dexamethasone.

Akynzeo capsules cover a broad range of chemotherapy regimens, including anthracycline plus cyclophosphamide-based regimens. Each ingredient targets a different stage: palonosetron addresses nausea and vomiting in the first 24 hours, while netupitant covers both the early and the delayed phase that can last several days after treatment.
