Here's the thing with tragacanth and your progestin-only pill (norgestrel): tragacanth is basically a gummy fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. That gel can grab onto pills sitting nearby and slow or shift how much actually gets absorbed into your body. With a birth control pill, even small changes in absorption matter, because you need steady hormone levels day after day for it to reliably prevent pregnancy.

I want to be clear that this is a theoretical concern based on how tragacanth behaves, not something proven with norgestrel specifically. To stay on the safe side, simply space them out: take your pill first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the tragacanth. If you use it often, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Progestin-Only (norethindrone) Oral Contraceptives Used For?

Norethindrone progestin-only pills — sometimes called the "mini-pill" — are used solely to prevent pregnancy. They do not contain estrogen, which makes them an option for women who cannot or prefer not to use estrogen-containing contraceptives.

When taken perfectly (same time every day, no missed pills), fewer than 1 in 100 women will become pregnant in the first year. With typical use, that number rises to about 9 in 100 — mostly because of late or skipped pills. Consistency is everything with this method.
