ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Osimertinib Mesylate
Osimertinib Mesylate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Tragacanth interacts with.
Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Tagrisso (osimertinib) and tragacanth. Tragacanth is a gummy fiber that swells into a thick gel when it meets fluid in your stomach. Because of that gel, it can theoretically grab onto a pill you swallow around the same time and change how much of the medicine your body absorbs. This is a once-daily pill that keeps your lung cancer in check, so steady, reliable absorption really matters.
To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how fiber behaves, not something proven to happen with osimertinib specifically. The simple fix is timing: take your Tagrisso first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any tragacanth. Please don't change your cancer medicine on your own. Loop in your oncology pharmacist or doctor before adding this supplement.
