Here's the gist with phenindamine (Nolahist), an older antihistamine you take by mouth for allergy symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes. Tragacanth is a plant gum that swells into a thick, slippery gel when it meets fluid in your stomach. The concern is purely theoretical: that gel could grab onto a pill and slow down or change how much phenindamine your body actually absorbs.

Phenindamine is not a prodrug, so it works as-is. If the gum traps it, you might get less relief; less commonly, absorption could shift the other way. This is based on pharmacology, not strong studies, so don't panic. A simple fix is spacing them out: take your phenindamine first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the tragacanth. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist.
