Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist: tragacanth forms a thick, slippery gel in your gut, and that gel can sometimes grab onto a pill and change how much of it gets absorbed. With pimozide, the worry is mostly the other way, that it could nudge your absorption up or down a bit. This matters because pimozide is a drug we dose carefully. Too little and your tics may not stay controlled. Too much can stress the heart's rhythm and bring on drowsiness or stiffness.

The good news is this is theoretical, based on how the gum behaves rather than real-world reports. A simple fix is timing: take your pimozide first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any tragacanth. Still, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Pimozide Used For?

Brand name: Orap

Pimozide tablets are used to suppress the motor tics (involuntary movements) and phonic tics (involuntary sounds or vocalizations) that occur in Tourette's Disorder. It is reserved for patients whose daily life or development is severely affected by these tics.

Pimozide is not a first-choice treatment, and it is not meant for tics that are only mildly bothersome or cosmetic in nature. It should only be considered when standard treatments have not worked well enough.
