Here's the gist: Tragacanth is a gel-forming fiber, and when it sits in your stomach with a pill like prucalopride, it can grab onto some of the medicine. That gooey gel may slow or reduce how much prucalopride actually gets absorbed into your body. If less of it gets in, you might not see the bowel-movement help you're counting on for your chronic constipation.

I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based on how the fiber behaves, not something proven in studies with this exact drug. To stay on the safe side, taking tragacanth about 30 to 60 minutes after your prucalopride helps keep them from mixing. When in doubt, run the timing past your pharmacist or doctor.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Prucalopride Used For?

Brand names: Resotran, Resolor, Motegrity

Prucalopride tablets — sold under the brand name Motegrity and also available as generic prucalopride and prucalopride succinate — are indicated for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in adults. CIC is ongoing constipation with no identified underlying cause.

This indication applies to all approved oral tablet forms of prucalopride. It is not approved for use in children; a study in pediatric patients was stopped early because the medication did not show effectiveness in that age group.
