Here's the simple version. Tragacanth is a thick, gel-forming fiber. When you take it close to an oral medicine, that slippery gel can sit in your gut and either slow down, speed up, or have no effect on how much of the drug gets absorbed. With oral sodium chloride (salt tablets, often used for low sodium or to replace salt), the concern is that the gel could change how much salt your body picks up at any given time.

I want to be honest with you: this is a theoretical concern based on how the fiber behaves, not something proven in studies. To keep it simple and safe, the usual advice is to take tragacanth about 30 to 60 minutes after your sodium chloride. If your sodium level is being closely watched, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut.
