Why this applies to Propranolol Hydrochloride

Propranolol Hydrochloride falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Valerian interacts with.

Valerian does not seem to have a clinically relevant effect on levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
Although some in vitro evidence suggests that valerian affects CYP2D6, clinical pharmacokinetic (PK) studies show that valerian is unlikely to affect the CYP2D6 enzyme. In one PK study, taking valerian 1000 mg (providing about 11 mg valerenic acid) nightly for 14 days did not affect the metabolism of dextromethorphan, a CYP2D6 substrate. In another PK study, taking valerian 125 mg three times daily for 28 days did not affect metabolism of debrisoquine, an accepted CYP2D6 probe-substrate.

Here's the good news on combining valerian with propranolol. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help break down propranolol, and early lab-dish studies hinted that valerian might block that enzyme. If it really did, propranolol could build up and cause more of its usual effects, like a slower heart rate, lower blood pressure, or extra sleepiness. But when researchers actually tested this in people, valerian did not meaningfully change how the body clears CYP2D6 drugs. So a real-world problem here is unlikely.

Keep in mind both can be mildly calming, so a little extra drowsiness is possible. Since this propranolol solution is often given to infants for hemangiomas, please run any valerian use past your pediatrician or pharmacist first.

What Is Propranolol (Infantile Hemangioma) Used For?

Brand name: Hemangeol

This intravenous (IV) form of propranolol is used in hospital settings to treat serious, life-threatening heart rhythm problems. It works on several types of abnormal rhythms, including those that happen during anesthesia or are caused by drug toxicity.

Specific uses include fast heart rhythms coming from the upper chambers of the heart (supraventricular tachycardia), dangerous rhythms caused by too much digitalis in the body, and certain fast rhythms triggered by excess stress hormones (catecholamines) during surgery.
