Wallflower and Beclomethasone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CORTICOSTEROIDS

Why this applies to Beclomethasone

Beclomethasone falls under CORTICOSTEROIDS — the group Wallflower interacts with.

Use of corticosteroids may cause electrolyte depletion and increase risk of cardiac glycoside toxicity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the concern with pairing Wallflower and your Beclomethasone inhaler. Wallflower contains natural compounds called cardiac glycosides, which act on the heart in a way similar to certain heart medicines. The worry isn't that one breaks down the other. Instead, corticosteroids like beclomethasone can lower body levels of potassium, and low potassium makes the heart more sensitive to those glycoside effects, which could raise the risk of an irregular or unsafe heartbeat.

To be fair, this is a theoretical caution based on pharmacology, not strong human studies. Inhaled beclomethasone delivers far less drug body-wide than steroid pills, so the potassium effect is usually small. Still, since Wallflower can be genuinely toxic, I'd steer clear of taking it internally and check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Beclomethasone page

“Most people on beclomethasone (Beclovent, Vanceril) use it daily to keep asthma or nasal allergies quiet, and plenty also take herbal products, which is where this list earns real caution. Of the 202 ingredients on this page, four rate major, and those deserve your attention ahead of everything else.”

About Wallflower

What is Wallflower?

  • Heart-related folk tonic
  • Nervous tension
  • Joint and muscle aches (topical)
  • Menstrual complaints
  • As an ornamental and fragrance plant

Wallflower (Erysimum cheiri) is a fragrant garden plant with a long history in traditional medicine, but there is very little modern human research to support any health use. It contains cardiac glycoside-type compounds that can be toxic, so it should not be taken internally without professional guidance, and it should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation

What Is Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Beclovent, Vanceril

Beclomethasone dipropionate HFA inhalation aerosol (the oral inhaler, sold as Qvar Redihaler) is used for the long-term, preventive treatment of asthma in people 5 years of age and older.

It is not a rescue inhaler. It does not relieve sudden asthma symptoms such as shortness of breath. The nasal spray form, Qnasl, appears in the supplied label text in studies of allergic rhinitis (nasal allergy symptoms), but no approved uses for it are listed there.
