White Pepper and Aspirin, Pentazocine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Aspirin, Pentazocine

Aspirin, Pentazocine falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group White Pepper interacts with.

In vitro evidence suggests that piperine, a constituent of white pepper, inhibits platelet aggregation. Theoretically, white pepper might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
Some anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Talwin Compound pairs aspirin with the pain reliever pentazocine. The piece that matters here is the aspirin, since it already thins your blood a bit by keeping platelets from clumping together. White pepper's main compound, piperine, has shown a similar mild platelet-slowing effect, but only in lab dish studies, not in real people.

So in theory, stacking the two could nudge your bleeding risk up a little, meaning easier bruising, nosebleeds, or a cut that takes longer to stop. The good news: the seasoning amount you sprinkle on dinner is very unlikely to cause trouble. The bigger question is concentrated piperine or pepper supplements. If you take those regularly, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Pentazocine page

“Talwin Compound pairs pentazocine, an opioid painkiller, with aspirin, and I read its supplement list with more concern than most. The great majority of entries do one of two things: raise the bleeding risk that aspirin already carries, or deepen the sedation pentazocine causes.”

About White Pepper

What is White Pepper?

  • Digestive upset
  • Seasoning and appetite support
  • Cough and cold remedies (traditional)
  • Minor aches and pains (traditional)
  • Antimicrobial (traditional)

White pepper comes from the same plant as black pepper and is mostly used as a kitchen spice. In normal food amounts it is generally safe for most people, but there is little solid human research supporting its use as a medicine. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a health condition.
