Deflazacort falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Zedoary interacts with.

Theoretically, zedoary might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In-vitro research shows that a methanol extract of zedoary strongly inhibits the CYP3A4 metabolism of the tyrosine kinase inhibitors lapatinib and sorafenib, and to a lesser extent, gefitinib.

Here's the gist for deflazacort (Emflaza). Your body activates this steroid and then clears it using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Zedoary, in lab dish studies, looks like it can slow that same enzyme down. If that held true in people, deflazacort could linger longer and build up, which may nudge up the usual steroid side effects: fluid retention and puffiness, higher blood sugar, mood or sleep changes, stomach upset, and over time more risk of infection or bone thinning.

I want to be honest, though, this concern is theoretical and based only on test-tube work, not real patients. Everyday culinary amounts of zedoary as a spice are unlikely to matter. Before adding a concentrated zedoary supplement, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Deflazacort Used For?

Brand name: Emflaza

Deflazacort treats Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic muscle disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. It is available under several brand names, each with slightly different age approvals.

Emflaza and Jaythari (both tablets and oral suspension) are approved for patients 2 years of age and older. Deflazacort tablets, Deflazacort oral suspension, Kymbee (tablet and oral suspension), and Pyquvi (oral suspension) are approved for patients 5 years of age and older.
