Elbasvir, Grazoprevir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Zedoary interacts with.

Theoretically, zedoary might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In-vitro research shows that a methanol extract of zedoary strongly inhibits the CYP3A4 metabolism of the tyrosine kinase inhibitors lapatinib and sorafenib, and to a lesser extent, gefitinib.

Here's the basic idea with Zepatier (elbasvir and grazoprevir): your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear these two antiviral drugs out. Zedoary, in lab dish studies only, seemed to slow that same enzyme down. If that held true in real people, it could let elbasvir and grazoprevir build up a bit higher than expected, which might mean more chance of side effects like nausea, tiredness, headache, or, importantly, stress on your liver (something that already matters a lot in hepatitis C treatment).

I want to be honest though: this is theoretical. It comes from test-tube work with unrelated cancer drugs, not from people taking Zepatier. These aren't prodrugs, so we're not talking about losing benefit. Still, since liver health is the whole point here, please run zedoary by your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

What Is Elbasvir and Grazoprevir Used For?

Brand name: Zepatier

Zepatier is used to treat chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 or genotype 4 infection in adults and children 12 years of age and older (or weighing at least 30 kg). It works against both the most common strain of HCV (genotype 1) and genotype 4.

Depending on the specific genotype, prior treatment history, and certain viral characteristics, Zepatier may be prescribed alone or combined with another antiviral medicine called ribavirin. Your prescriber will determine the right regimen and duration for your situation.
