Why this applies to Sorafenib

Sorafenib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Zedoary interacts with.

Theoretically, zedoary might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In-vitro research shows that a methanol extract of zedoary strongly inhibits the CYP3A4 metabolism of the tyrosine kinase inhibitors lapatinib and sorafenib, and to a lesser extent, gefitinib.

Here's the gist with zedoary and Sorafenib (Nexavar). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear sorafenib out of your body. In lab dish studies, concentrated zedoary extract blocked that enzyme fairly strongly. If that same thing happened in a person, sorafenib could build up to higher levels than intended, which may mean more of its known side effects, like hand-foot skin reactions, rash, diarrhea, fatigue, and high blood pressure.

That said, this is only a theory based on test-tube work, not real patient cases, so we don't truly know if it matters in everyday life. A pinch of zedoary as a cooking spice is unlikely to be a problem, but concentrated supplement doses are a different story. Since you're managing cancer, please run any zedoary product past your oncologist or pharmacist first.

About Sorafenib

What Is Sorafenib Used For?

Brand name: Nexavar

Sorafenib tablets are approved to treat three types of cancer. The first is unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) — liver cancer that cannot be removed with surgery. The second is advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) — kidney cancer that has spread or progressed. Both the brand Nexavar and generic sorafenib tablets are approved for these two uses.

The third use is for locally recurrent or metastatic, progressive differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) — thyroid cancer that has spread or worsened and no longer responds to radioactive iodine treatment. Nexavar and sorafenib tablets are both approved for this use as well.
