What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 0 of its 5 active ingredients.
  • “A Proprietary Probiotic Blend” is a proprietary blend — the label gives one combined amount (71.50 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.

UP4 Adult is a five-ingredient probiotic capsule. Three of those ingredients are individual bacterial strains — Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1, Bifidobacterium bifidum UABb-10, and Bifidobacterium longum UABl-14 — plus two others listed as proprietary strains (Bifidobacterium lactis and Lactobacillus plantarum).

These are live microorganisms meant to support your gut flora. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients: cellulose, fructooligosaccharides (a type of fiber), magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Support digestive and immune health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Constipation, Diarrhea, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Lactose intolerance, Gut flora balance — and 3 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  • Also on file: Bifidobacterium Bifidum is rated "Possibly Effective" for Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

The evidence for these specific strains is mixed. Lactobacillus acidophilus has possibly effective evidence for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.

Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections. Bifidobacterium longum has insufficient evidence for any of the conditions studied — hay fever, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, anxiety, asthma, and athletic performance all lack reliable data.

We don't hold effectiveness ratings for the other two strains in this product.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 3 of the 3 matched ingredients.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 3 of 3.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 3 of 3.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

The probiotics in UP4 are generally well tolerated in healthy adults. Uncommon side effects from Lactobacillus acidophilus include gas, bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea when combined with other probiotics.

Bifidobacterium strains may cause bloating and flatulence, though these haven't been specifically reported for B. bifidum alone. Rare serious infections (bacteremia, sepsis) have been documented in the medical literature, though most occurred in critically ill or immune-compromised patients, not healthy people.

If you have a severely weakened immune system, check with your doctor first. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Bifidobacterium longum are all rated possibly safe, but data are limited — talk with your healthcare provider for personalized advice.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 3 of the 3 matched ingredients can interact with medications — Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Bifidobacterium Bifidum, Bifidobacterium Longum.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 182 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Adult by UP4: Common Questions

Does Adult by UP4 interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Adult has a known interaction with 182 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Adult contains 5 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take UP4 Adult while I'm on antibiotics?
You can, but timing matters. Antibiotics can kill the live bacteria in probiotics, making them less effective. Separate your antibiotic doses from UP4 — your pharmacist can tell you exactly how far apart. It's important to check this before you start.
Is this safe for a weakened immune system?
The data suggest caution. Healthy people tolerate these probiotics well, but people with seriously weakened immune systems should talk with their doctor first, since rare cases of infection have occurred in that group.
What are the side effects?
Uncommon ones include gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea — usually mild and temporary. Rash and itching have been reported rarely in one clinical trial, though it's unclear which ingredient caused them. Serious infections are very rare and have occurred mainly in critically ill patients.
Is this okay to take while pregnant or breastfeeding?
The three strains we have data for are rated possibly safe in pregnancy and lactation, but the evidence is limited. Talk with your doctor or midwife for personalized advice, especially while breastfeeding.
Does this actually work?
Lactobacillus acidophilus has possibly effective evidence for IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Helicobacter pylori, and bacterial vaginosis. Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory infections. Bifidobacterium longum hasn't shown reliable evidence for the conditions studied. We don't have effectiveness data for the other two strains.
What are the inactive ingredients?
The capsule contains cellulose, fructooligosaccharides (a prebiotic fiber), magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide. These are excipients to hold the product together — not the active probiotics themselves.
