Alfalfa is generally well tolerated in the amounts people eat as food, but supplement doses are a different story. The most common side effects are digestive: abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, gas, and bloating — especially in the first week.

These happened in a small number of trial participants. Rarely, chronic use has been linked to a lupus-like syndrome, and skin inflammation (dermatitis) has been reported after weeks of regular consumption.
