Alitretinoin falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Alfalfa interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of alfalfa with photosensitizing drugs might have additive effects.
Animal research suggests that excessive doses of alfalfa may increase photosensitivity, possibly due to its chlorophyll content. It is unclear if this effect would be clinically relevant in humans.

Here's the gist with alfalfa and Panretin (alitretinoin). Alitretinoin is a gel you apply to Kaposi's sarcoma lesions, and one of its common side effects is making your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so treated areas can burn, redden, or feel irritated more easily. Alfalfa contains chlorophyll and certain plant compounds that, in animal studies, seemed to bump up sun sensitivity too.

The concern is simply that the two together might add up and make your skin even quicker to burn. I'll be honest though, this is theoretical and based on animal research using large amounts, not proven in people. Food portions of alfalfa likely don't matter much. Either way, protect treated skin from sun and run any alfalfa supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Alitretinoin Used For?

Brand name: Panretin

Panretin Gel is approved to treat cutaneous lesions — visible skin sores — in adults who have AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), a cancer that causes abnormal tissue to grow in the skin.

Panretin Gel is applied directly to the affected skin spots. It is not for use when the disease has spread widely enough to need systemic (whole-body) treatment — for example, when there are more than 10 new lesions in a month, or when the lungs, lymph nodes, or internal organs are involved.
