Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: annatto seed extract in a liquid form. Annatto comes from the seeds of a tropical tree and has been used traditionally in food coloring and cooking.
The product also contains glycerin and water as inactive ingredients to create the liquid base.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The effectiveness of annatto for any of its marketed uses — athletic performance, benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), exercise-induced muscle soreness, or bad breath — is not well established in the data we hold. All of these uses are rated as having insufficient reliable evidence.
That doesn't mean annatto doesn't work; it means the scientific evidence isn't strong enough yet to say either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Annatto is generally recognized as safe when used as a food coloring in small amounts. But concentrated supplement doses like those in this product haven't been well studied, so the safety data is limited.
In the small number of people who use it, annatto is usually well tolerated by mouth, though constipation has been reported rarely. Allergic reactions — ranging from hives and swelling to severe drops in blood pressure and anaphylaxis — have been documented, especially when annatto food coloring is used.
One case report linked annatto food coloring to worsening of irritable bowel syndrome symptoms (diarrhea, bloating, belly pain) in a woman; her symptoms improved when she stopped consuming annatto-containing products and returned when she reintroduced them.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antidiabetes drugs (insulin, metformin, sulfonylureas, or any other blood sugar medication), check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting annatto. The product may change how well your medication works or increase the risk of low blood sugar.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Annatto is a traditional plant extract without strong evidence for the conditions it claims to address. If you have diabetes or prediabetes, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using this product — it may affect your blood sugar medication.
If you've had allergic reactions to annatto-containing foods or cosmetics before, this supplement isn't for you.
