Dapagliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Annatto interacts with.

Animal studies suggest that certain annatto extracts may have hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic effects. Theoretically, taking annatto with antidiabetes drugs could reduce the therapeutic effects of these drugs or increase the risk for additive hypoglycemia. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.

Here's the honest picture with annatto and your Farxiga: this one is mostly theoretical. In animal studies, some annatto extracts nudged blood sugar one way or the other, so the concern is that concentrated annatto supplements could either blunt dapagliflozin's blood sugar lowering or add to it. There's no solid human evidence here, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

If annatto did add to the effect, you might notice signs of low blood sugar, things like shakiness, sweating, or feeling lightheaded. The amount of annatto used to color food is unlikely to matter at all. If you're taking a real supplement dose, just keep an eye on your home glucose readings and loop in your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.

Annatto is a plant-based coloring made from the seeds of the achiote tree and is widely used as a safe food dye. While it has a long history in traditional medicine and contains antioxidant compounds, there is little high-quality human research supporting its use as a supplement. It can trigger allergic reactions in some people, so use caution and talk with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Dapagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Farxiga

Dapagliflozin is used for several serious conditions. It helps improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes (alongside diet and exercise). It also reduces the risk of hospitalization for heart failure in adults with type 2 diabetes who have established cardiovascular disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors.

Farxiga (dapagliflozin) is additionally approved to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, hospitalization, and urgent visits due to heart failure in adults with heart failure — and to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease, including reducing the risk of kidney failure and cardiovascular death, in adults with chronic kidney disease at risk of getting worse.
