Canagliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Annatto interacts with.

Animal studies suggest that certain annatto extracts may have hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic effects. Theoretically, taking annatto with antidiabetes drugs could reduce the therapeutic effects of these drugs or increase the risk for additive hypoglycemia. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.

Here's the honest picture: this one is mostly a what if, not something proven in people. In animal studies, certain concentrated annatto extracts seemed to nudge blood sugar in either direction, up in some cases and down in others. Because canagliflozin (Invokana) is already working to lower your blood sugar by flushing extra glucose out through your urine, the worry is that annatto could either blunt that benefit or add to it.

If annatto lowered your sugar too much alongside Invokana, you might feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, or lightheaded. The good news is that the small amounts of annatto used as a food coloring are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated supplement doses are the real question mark. If you take those, check your blood sugar a bit more closely and let your pharmacist or doctor know.

Annatto is a plant-based coloring made from the seeds of the achiote tree and is widely used as a safe food dye. While it has a long history in traditional medicine and contains antioxidant compounds, there is little high-quality human research supporting its use as a supplement. It can trigger allergic reactions in some people, so use caution and talk with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Canagliflozin

What Is Canagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Invokana

Invokana (canagliflozin) is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes. It is not for type 1 diabetes.

In adults with type 2 diabetes, Invokana is also used to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death in those with established cardiovascular disease, and to reduce the risk of serious kidney complications — including end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization for heart failure — in those with diabetic kidney disease and high levels of protein in the urine.
