HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Astaxanthin 2 mg by Source Naturals
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This softgel contains one active ingredient: astaxanthin, a carotenoid compound derived from haematococcus pluvialis algae. The rest of the capsule is made up of inactive ingredients — extra virgin olive oil, bovine gelatin, glycerin, and purified water — that serve as the base and help deliver the astaxanthin.
Does it work?
No specific claim
The evidence for astaxanthin isn't established in the data we hold. Effectiveness ratings for age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome all come back as insufficient reliable evidence to rate.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means larger, well-designed human trials are needed to know for sure.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated, but long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects in trials are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red fecal color.
At higher doses — well above the 2 mg in this product — some people reported increased bowel movements or severe stomach pain, so it's worth starting low and watching how you feel. There isn't enough safety data to know whether astaxanthin is okay during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your pharmacist or doctor if you're on any medications broken down by CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 enzymes in the liver — including cholesterol medications, certain heart drugs, and many others. Astaxanthin may theoretically lower the levels of these drugs, though this effect hasn't been confirmed in humans yet.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula marketed for general wellness rather than one specific gradeable purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Astaxanthin might appeal to you if you're interested in a carotenoid supplement and can rule out interactions with your other medications. However, if you take drugs processed through your liver's CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 systems — which includes many common medications — you'll want to check your exact list with your pharmacist or doctor before you start.
They can tell you whether this product is right for you and whether any dose adjustments are needed.

Formula
Antioxidant carotenoid
Astaxanthin, a member of the carotenoid family, is a powerful antioxidant. In vitro research demonstrates that astaxanthin may be up to 4 times stronger than other carotenoids such as lutein, cryptoxanthin, and beta-carotene, and may be up to 85 times stronger than alpha-tocopherol. Astaxanthin possesses both hydrophilic and lipophilic properties, and may provide health benefits throughout the body by modulating the activity of free radicals.

Astaxanthin 2 mg by Source Naturals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Astaxanthin 2 mg by Source Naturals contains one active ingredient, astaxanthin, which may interact with certain medications.
The main concern is with drugs that your liver breaks down using specific enzyme systems.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Astaxanthin may lower levels of medications metabolized by CYP3A4 enzymes — a moderate-severity effect. Lab studies show astaxanthin can speed up this enzyme, though this hasn't been observed in actual patients yet.
Similarly, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs broken down by CYP2B6 enzymes, also rated moderate severity and also observed only in lab work so far.
Although astaxanthin itself has been checked, we could not evaluate haematococcus pluvialis algae extract — its individual component ingredients aren't listed on file. Before starting this product, run your exact medications through the search tool on this page, especially if you take drugs for cholesterol, blood pressure, heart rhythm, or any medication your doctor or pharmacist tells you is metabolized by your liver.
